Mid September –> December
Cairns Black Marlin Charters:
Cairns to Lizard Island Giant Black Marlin on the Ribbon Reefs
On September 25, 1966 the first grander black marlin – black marlin in excess of 1000 lbs – was caught by angler Richard Obach with Capt. George Bransford off Cairns.
Until then there was a belief in the fishery, but it was that single fish that created an industry that dreams are made of~!
Since that time, more giant black marlin have been released between Cairns and Lizard Island than anywhere else in the world. In fact, year after year, more are released here than anywhere and it is this reliability that brings anglers from all over the world to fish here.
The season typically runs from late September through to early December.
Captain Luke Fallon – once considered a young gun of the fleet starting on deck as a crewman at 16 and progressing to captain at the ripe old age of 21 – is now an industry veteran of 39 season. Still very young at heart, he is considered of the best professional skippers on the reef!
LIVE ABOARD Cairns black marlin CHARTERS
Throughout the season the fish move up and down a 100+ mile stretch of reef depending on factors like water temperature, currents and water quality. Our fleet is primarily live aboard which gives us great flexibility to move along the reef and stay on the main body of fish.
The other option for larger groups and when you might have accompanying visitors who don’t wish to fish (or at least not every day) is mothershipping.
The set up for anglers living on board is very comfortable with most boats being equipped with gyro stabilisers.
And the ‘live aboard’ experience is an attraction in itself – great food, great company, great fishing!
More than big marlin
Cairns black marlin charters
For our live aboard season, while we are primarily fishing for marlin, we are fishing a very special part of the world on the Great Barrier Reef and offers plentiful fun options beyond the marlin.
In the mornings, guests can enjoy a snorkel or swim after breakfast and sport fishing for bait and the table, before heading outside the reef. Throwing poppers for giant trevally (GT) is another option.
At night, we enjoy socialising and unwinding while reviewing the days marlin photo and video footage and enjoying good food, good company and a few drinks!
